A Beginner's Guide to Understanding Your Aura

What Is an Aura?

Have you ever felt someone's energy before they even spoke?

Perhaps you’ve walked into a room and sensed tension or joy without knowing why.

These experiences often relate to the aura—a vibrant, energetic field that surrounds all living things.

Understanding the aura is the first step in exploring the fascinating world of energy and self-awareness.

An aura is the subtle energy field that envelops the physical body. It’s not visible to the naked eye for most people but can be sensed intuitively or seen by those trained in energy work. Ancient cultures and modern metaphysical practices alike describe the aura as a dynamic, living expression of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual states.

Think of your aura as your personal energy signature—a colourful, ever-changing field that reflects your current well-being. It’s influenced by your emotions, thoughts, and even your environment.

The Layers of the Aura

The aura is made up of multiple layers, each with its unique qualities and functions:

  1. Physical/Etheric Layer: Closest to the body, reflecting physical health and vitality. Typically appears as a fine, translucent outline or faint glow.

  2. Emotional Layer: Captures your feelings and emotional state. These colours will shift and change in line with your emotions.

  3. Mental Layer: Houses your thoughts, beliefs, and cognitive processes. This may appear as a network of lines, shapes or symbols.

  4. Astral Layer: Acts as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, carrying the energy of your relationships and connections.

  5. Spiritual Layers: Include the Etheric Template, Celestial Body, Causal Body and Ketheric layers, representing divine will, spiritual love, and connection to the universe. These layers can appear as a radiant or ethereal glow, or shimmering star-like field.

Each layer corresponds to specific aspects of your life, and when in harmony, they create a radiant, balanced energy field.

The Colours of the Aura

Your aura is not static—it can change colours depending on your mood, health, and spiritual growth. Each colour carries its own meaning, below are examples but, as with varying shades of colours, there are a symphony of meanings:

  • Red: Vitality, passion, and grounding.

  • Orange: Creativity, joy, and emotional connection.

  • Yellow: Optimism, intellect, and clarity.

  • Green: Healing, love, compassion, and growth.

  • Blue: Calmness, communication, and trust.

  • Violet/Indigo: Intuition, spirituality, and wisdom.

  • Pink: Love, empathy and compassion

  • White: Purity, clarity, spiritual awakening.

Understanding the colours of your aura provides insight into your current state and areas for growth.

Dark or muddy colours in the aura often signify physical or emotional imbalances, stress, or unresolved issues, while bright and clear colours reflect good health and a positive mental state. Rapidly fluctuating colours may indicate emotional volatility or potential health concerns, highlighting shifts in energy that may need attention.

How to Sense or See Your Aura

While not everyone can see auras visually, you can begin to sense them with practice:

  • Meditation: Focus on your energy field during meditation. Pay attention to any sensations, colours, or feelings that arise.

  • Mirror Exercise: Stand in front of a mirror with a plain background and soft lighting. Relax your gaze and look slightly past your reflection. Over time, you may notice a faint glow or colour around your body.

  • Practice with Others: Spend time observing others’ energy. Notice how you feel in their presence, as your intuition often picks up on subtle changes in their aura.

Caring for Your Aura

Just like your physical body, your aura requires care and attention:

  • Grounding: Walk barefoot on the earth or spend time in nature to strengthen your connection to the physical world.

  • Cleansing: Use visualisations, such as imagining a white light washing over you, to clear stagnant or negative energy.

  • Protection: Visualise a golden shield around your body to safeguard your energy from external influences.
