Gnomes are some of the oldest and most popular fairy-tale creatures in Germanic/Nordic culture. The gnome usually has the name of “Tomte” in Swedish, “Nisser” in Norway and “Tonttu” in Finland, and “Heinzelmännchen” in German.
According to legend, gnomes are small elf-like beings that often live around houses and in barns. Gnomes are fond of caring for children, and if you befriended a gnome, then they would help to protect you against misfortune.
Gnomes were often said to be particularly active at night when the people of the house were asleep. Another attribute that makes the Gnome interesting is its passion for work. These beings love to do things around the home and don’t like people interfering with their tasks.
