Speakeasy Collection

$9.00

Speakeasies were in operation during the Prohibition era ~ mid 1920s to 1930s. During that time, the sale, manufacture and transportation (bootlegging) of alcoholic beverages was illegal throughout the United States.

Patrons were often told to “speak easy” about these secret bars in public, or when inside it, so as to not alert the authorities or neighbours.

Although failing to account for earlier usage outside the U.S., a common American anecdote traces the term to saloon owner Kate Hester, who ran an unlicensed bar in the 1880s in McKeesport, supposedly telling her rowdy customers to "speak easy" to avoid attention from authorities.

Speakeasies largely disappeared after Prohibition ended in 1933.
